The following is a reprint of a e-newsletter that Clyth sends out monthly to potential sellers and buyers. He has been in the business for many, many years and has been very, very successful. It’s informative for all those that receive it. It contains information on the firm, tips on buying and selling a business, some top businesses for sale, etc. It is short, but very interesting — and gets results.
Too many business brokers wait for something to happen; they are not pro-active. In many cases, they are not even active. Today’s market doesn’t work like it used to. Business brokers used to advertize in major daily newspapers, the buyer calls came in via telephone, and the address at the end of the ad was for the broker’s office. (Yes, we know that some buyers found the address and drove right to it — only to find the brokers office. They usually were not very happy, but they did come in to the office.)
Brokers in those days knew that they needed to get themselves in front of potential buyers. Today is different — too much of the contact is done via email messages and/or telephone. I believe that personal contact is still the way to go. Most of us believe that buyers really don’t know what they want. We believe that showing them the actual businesses can go a long way to a purchase; that it’s about a lot more than just profit and p & l statements.
Sellers employ us to market their business with the ultimate goal of selling it for the highest price possible and with a down payment that is comfortable for both sides. Emotion is still important. Most buyers will buy a business in a desirable area, one that they feel comfortable (and proud) to own, etc.
Build an email (or mailing list) and try a well done newsletter (such as Clyth’s) as a strong part of your marketing efforts.
