The Future of Business Brokerage: 5 Tools We Need for the Years Ahead – Part 2

Glen Cooper recently joined us for the second part of his new 7-part webinar series on the 5 tools business brokers need for the future. In Part 2 of “The Future of Business Brokerage: 5 Tools We Need for the Years Ahead,” business broker legend Glen Cooper elaborated on what information and tools business brokers will need to properly navigate a quickly change industry and world. Cooper has been a business broker since 1979, is a managing partner of Colorado Business Brokers, and a founding member and Fellow of the IBBA. He is also the author of Glen Cooper on Business Brokerage, a 36-video course, eBook and book.

In the second part of his 7-part webinar series, Cooper covered a good deal of ground. The core of this webinar was a reflection on Tool 1-the Self Teaching Tool. First, Cooper wants business brokers and M&A advisors to realize that, in a sense there is a way to predict the future.

He also discussed the Six Steps of Teaching Ourselves. Cooper stated with great clarity, “We aren’t in control of the world economy…but when we do our business plans, if we do it right, if we build our business correctly, then we actually control most of our future. And that’s what I wanted to explore during this 7-part series.”

In short, it’s important to have a vision. Further, implementing that vision with concrete steps in the form of a plan are essential for success. He also noted that “predicting the future is legitimately about observing and predicting future trends. What I’m going to offer you in this webinar series is a deep dive into what we could do individually to predict our own futures.”

Cooper is intrigued by psychiatrist and author Phil Stutz. Stutz is a psychiatrist and the subject of a popular Netflix film entitled, “Stutz,” by actor and director Jonah Hill. Stutz and co-author Barry Michels wrote the New York Times Bestseller, “The Tools,” which centers on “5 tools to help you find courage, creativity, and willpower and inspire you to live life in forward motion.”

As Cooper points out, the Netflix film isn’t about the business brokerage world, but is instead about the tools needed to “engage pain, uncertainty and hard work in order to master anything we want.” Sadly, Stutz is slowly dying of Parkinson’s, but this has not stopped him from penning a very influential book in The Tools.

In our next article, we will further explore Cooper’s Tool 1-the Self Teaching Tool. We will also look at the key works which are influencing Cooper’s approach with the 5 Tools that every business broker needs for the years ahead.
